Dark Nights, Bright Relationships

Winter often gets a reputation for giving out the blues. Cold, blustery weather and long dark days can come with a side of depression, gloom, and isolation. And when we feel off, down, discouraged it can be easy to miss opportunities to spark connection with our partners. Yet, winter creates incredible opportunity for us to have extra time to intentionally strengthen our romantic relationships! The following are 4 different ideas that can enhance and deepen your relationship this winter. Try them out! And let me know in the comment section what works best for you.

1. Create Cozy Moments

Snuggle up close together under a shared blanket with a cup of your favorite warm beverage – hot chocolate, coffee or warm cider – and read together. Maybe just a chapter or a short story or some poems. Take turns reading out loud. This simple, intimate activity will cultivate your sense of togetherness and strengthen your emotional bond as you listen to each other read and just sit next to each other.

2. Try A New Winter Activity Together

Attempting a new winter activity as a couple will create an opportunity for shared experiences. Going skiing, ice skating, building a snowman, having a snowball fight, or snow tubing will foster teamwork, communication, laughter, and adventure together. Laughter is known to relieve stress, enhance moods, stimulate circulation, increase social connection, and can even boost the immune system! The benefits of trying out a new winter activity with your partner are numerous. What are you waiting for?

3. Plan A Winter Getaway

A winter escape can breathe new life into your romantic relationship. Plan a weekend winter getaway to a cozy cabin in the mountains, a quaint bed and breakfast in a snow-covered town, or let Spark Counseling curate a marriage intensive retreat just for you and your lover! The change of scenery, the time carved out for each other, the shared experiences, and the conversation will spark new connection and enhance your bond with each other while giving you a break from the mundane routine of everyday life.

4. Throw A Winter Themed Party

Celebrating is a great way to enhance life as a celebration can cause one to relax, experience a positive atmosphere, and have feelings of gratitude, enjoyment and fun. Why not gather with several other couples or friends and families and throw a winter-themed party? Host a soup potluck where everyone brings a different pot of soup to share. Have an outdoor snow fight with snow forts and snow balls. Go sledding as a group then warm up at the local Waffle House after. Enjoy pizza and build hot-chocolate-bombs while sharing stories of your favorite winter memories. All those winter party ideas sound cheesey? Make up your own winter themed party and invite others to celebrate the season with you and your partner.

Winter doesn’t have to be a downer to you or your relationship. Embrace this season! Your relationship can brighten up the darkest winter nights. And don’t forget to share the winter ideas you try and what works for you!
